It
has take us a long time to find an effective process for making good
compost.
In our early attempts it would take up to a year, and still we would
have a lot of un-broken down food pieces.
Thus we would end up with lots of partially digested compost piles and
lots of flies. Now we make compost in 2 or 3 months and use it with
almost all of our new planting. |

|

|
One
of the things that has made a difference is grinding the garbage
before it is placed in a compost pile.
This speeds up the digesting process of the compost. |
|
Also
keeping all the compost in a controlled area and turning it
frequently with a tractor makes for a more thorough composting of
garbage. |

|
 |
Sifting
the compost through a screen allows us to get fully useable
compost. |
Grinding
wet garbage and then hosing out the machine that we grind the
garbage (called a hammer mill), hosing out garbage cans, and rain all
make for a lot of mud.
This is where you can help. |

We
could make the composting area more functional and sanitary with a
concrete pad.
Each bag of cement requires 3 bags of gravel. All of the cement and
gravel need to come on the barge.
Barge costs are around 3 times the cost of the materials themselves.
|
The
cost for a concrete base for our composting area is $7,800 (in US
dollars).
Please help us to clean up our composting process.
